Welcome

Welcome to the Lowcountry Livability PAC!

Our Story

In early 2017, a group of citizens from the City of Charleston and Charleston County gathered to discuss a number of issues that were negatively impacting their neighborhoods and the region at large. It was evident that decision-making by local governments was marked by divisiveness rather than unity.

This group felt strongly that more issues unite, rather than divide, the communities and municipalities throughout the region. And it was apparent that organizing our efforts was the best way to ensure that our elected officials would address these issues, such as housing affordability, transportation, climate change, and tourism management.

Specifically, these citizens feel that local officials need to prioritize such issues as:

    • Resiliency planning, along with drainage infrastructure, to reduce flooding impacts;
    • Transportation infrastructure investment that accommodates all forms of mobility and connectivity across the region;
    • Tourism management to control the impact on the livability of those who are residents of Charleston, especially on the peninsula, through such initiatives as development controls on hotels and short term rentals and updating the City of Charleston’s tourism management plan;
    • Affordabilty of housing that will enable lower and middle-income residents to continue to enjoy living, working, and playing in the Charleston region; and
    • Respect for the development limits that are represented in the Greenbelt.

A gathering of individuals — primarily from West Ashley, Johns Island, James Island, and downtown Charleston — decided to create the Lowcountry Livability PAC (LLPAC) and established a steering committee to begin raising funds for the 2017 Charleston City Council race. In that race, LLPAC endorsed three candidates, impacted the overall conversation about livability as a priority, and helped elect councilmember Carol Jackson.

As LLPAC continues to grow, it aims to support candidates in races at the municipal and county level throughout the Charleston Lowcountry region.
